Withdrawal of aid from Madagascar hitting poor hard

The Guardian's "Poverty Matters Blog" examines the effects of the withdrawal of international aid and debt relief from Madagascar following the country's last coup in 2009. According to the article, "80% of the population is classed as living in poverty. A household survey last year by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) found that aid sanctions are biting the wrong people: school enrolment has plummeted and health indicators are in decline."

RI Hospital fellow receives TSFRE funds for cardiothoracic surgery research

Antonio Lassaletta, M.D., a fellow in cardiothoracic surgery research at Rhode Island Hospital, has been awarded a Research Fellowship from the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE) to support his project, "Improving Myocardial Perfusion in a Diabetic Swine Model of Chronic Cardiac Ischemia." TSFRE awarded just two Research Fellowships in 2011; Lassaletta's fellowship is for two years.

New Westchester Montefiore Laser and Eye Center to offer ophthalmology services

The new Montefiore Laser and Eye Center recently opened its doors to provide comprehensive care to Westchester patients at the Montefiore Medical Specialists of Westchester in Scarsdale, New York. Seven board-certified ophthalmologists from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center provide patients with specialty emphasis in pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastic surgery, glaucoma, cornea and laser refractive surgery.

Thirty years into the epidemic, as world leaders come together at the United Nations to recommit to a global AIDS response, the broad-based international coalition issued a statement calling for world leaders to support a rational, evidence-based approach to responding to AIDS.

Unique clinical trial addresses important questions about treating AIDS-related cancers

As the world marks the 30-year anniversary of the first reporting of HIV/AIDS, now comes the realization of a new challenge for people with the incurable disease. For reasons not yet clear, people with HIV face a higher rate of cancers not usually associated with HIV.
