University at Buffalo smoking cessation researchers applaud federal plans on new cigarette labeling

University at Buffalo smoking cessation researchers today applauded federal plans to require cigarette packs and ads to carry bigger, much more prominent and graphic health warnings, including images of the destruction to the lungs caused by tobacco, which must cover half of a cigarette pack. In announcing the initiative, the Health and Human Services Department called the new warnings "the most significant change in more than 25 years" in cigarette packages and advertising.

NJIT expert to discuss history of sickle cell disease at NIH symposium

The history of sickle cell disease in the 20th century and its link to race is the focus of a Nov. 16, 2010 talk at a national symposium by NJIT Associate Professor Stephen Pemberton, PhD, an expert on the history of diseases. Pemberton will speak and join a panel discussion at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, 100th anniversary symposium commemorating the discovery of sickle cell disease by Chicago physician James B. Herrick.

High cholesterol levels in middle age do not appear to increase women's risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia later in life, new Johns Hopkins-led research finds, despite a body of scientific evidence long suggesting a link between the two.

Study suggests mid-life cholesterol level may not linked to later development of Alzheimer's disease

Contrary to earlier research, a new, long-term study suggests that cholesterol level in mid-life may not be linked to later development of Alzheimer's disease, according to a study published in the November 10, 2010, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. However, the results suggest that large decreases in cholesterol levels in old age could be a better predictor of developing the memory-robbing disease.

PPIs, antiplatelet drugs can help treat CV disease patients at high risk of upper GI bleeding

Using proton pump inhibitors and antiplatelet drugs (thienopyridines) together is an appropriate way of treating patients with cardiovascular disease who are at high risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeds, despite recent concerns about an adverse interaction between these two types of drugs, according to an Expert Consensus Document released jointly today by the American College of Cardiology Foundation, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Heart Association.

Covidien analysis finds lower incidence of GI adverse events with topical NSAIDs versus oral

Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products, announced the results of an analysis that will be presented at the American College of Rheumatology's Annual Scientific Meeting. A pooled analysis of safety data suggests that patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) receiving the topical PENNSAID® (diclofenac sodium topical solution) 1.5% w/w had significantly fewer gastrointestinal (GI)-related adverse events than those receiving an oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

The Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives announced today the City and State elected officials who will meet with the leaders of nine Hispanic health associations to discuss Hispanic Health Care Disparities, Policy and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Medicinal mushroom formula fights breast cancer

Researchers at Indiana University and Methodist Research Institute studied an innovative medicinal mushroom formula against breast cancer. The impressive results are found in the December issue of the International Journal of Oncology.
