BTE awards Diabetes Care Recognition Program certificates to 118 Montefiore Medical Group physicians

Bridges to Excellence, a national program that recognizes and rewards physicians for delivering better quality care, today awarded its sought-after Diabetes Care Recognition Program certificate to the 118 physicians in Montefiore Medical Center's 20 outpatient care facilities, known as the Montefiore Medical Group, for substantially lowering blood sugar levels and "bad" cholesterol levels in thousands of adult patients with diabetes.

Use of lubricants with anal sex associated with increased risk of rectal sexually transmitted infections

The risk of acquiring HIV through unprotected anal sex is at least 20 times greater than with unprotected vaginal sex and increases if other infections are already present in the rectal lining. Could the use of lubricants - at least certain kinds - be another risk factor among men and women who engage in receptive anal intercourse? Two studies presented today at the International Microbicides Conference in Pittsburgh, suggest the answer is yes.

Celgene Corporation announced that as a result of Barr Laboratories, Inc., withdrawing its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for thalidomide with the US Food and Drug Administration, the US District Court for the District of New Jersey has granted the requested dismissal of all claims and counterclaims in the thalidomide patent cases.

Study finds improvement in detection of breast cancer in mammograms over 9-year period

Researchers analyzing 2.5 million screening mammograms performed on nearly one million women found discrimination of cancerous from non-cancerous lesions improved over a nine-year period. Results of the study are published in the online edition of the journal Radiology.

In the first scientific study of its kind, shark cartilage extract, AE-941 or Neovastat, has shown no benefit as a therapeutic agent when combined with chemotherapy and radiation for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, according to researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Weill Cornell Medical College today celebrated the start of construction on its new Medical Research Building, a state-of-the-art facility that will more than double the institution's existing research space. The 18-story, $650 million building is the centerpiece of Weill Cornell's $1.3 billion Discoveries that Make a Difference Campaign, the country's largest for a medical college. A total of $1 billion has been raised toward this goal in a record time of less than four years.

Although congenital heart disease represents the most common major birth defect, scientists have not previously identified the common variation in the genes that give rise to it. Now genetics and cardiology researchers, two of them brothers, have discovered a genetic variant on chromosome 5 that strongly raises the risk of congenital heart disease.
