SAGE announces launch of new international open access journal of sports medicine

SAGE today announces the launch of a new international open access journal, the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine. This journal was developed by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine in collaboration with professional sports medicine organizations from around the world as a global, peer-reviewed open access journal that will publish content for both researchers and practitioners studying orthopeadic sports medicine, arthroscopy, and knee arthroplasty.

Scientists reveal that exposure to everyday noise may affect cardiovascular system

Exposure to noise, for example from road traffic, may adversely affect the cardiovascular system. Until now, underlying mechanisms linking noise to elevated cardiovascular risk have rarely been explored in epidemiological studies. Scientists of Helmholtz Zentrum München have now shown that exposure to noise during everyday life influences heart rate variability, i.e. the ability of the heart to adjust the rate at which it beats to acute events.

New study examines injuries to children related to amusement rides

A new study by researchers in the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital examined injuries to children related to amusement rides, which included rides at amusement parks (fixed-site rides), rides at fairs and festivals (mobile rides) and rides found at local malls, stores, restaurants or arcades (mall rides).

New screening guidelines: An important shift in HIV testing

Beth Meyerson, health policy expert at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington, said the new screening guidelines by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force represent an important shift in HIV testing and will result in more HIV screenings because they will now be reimbursable. A University of Eastern Finland study showed that low serum vitamin D levels are a risk factor for pneumonia. The risk of contracting pneumonia was more than 2.5 times greater in subjects with the lowest vitamin D levels than in subjects with high vitamin D levels.
