58% of Americans believe that H1N1 flu is a serious health hazard: Survey

A majority (58%) of Americans believe that the H1N1 flu is a serious health hazard, according to a new survey released today by Silverlink Communications, Inc. This represents a marked increase as compared to May 2009, when 47% of Americans held this same perception of H1N1. While most Americans believe H1N1 is a serious health hazard, less than one-third (31%) of Americans plan on getting the H1N1 flu vaccine this year, with safety and efficacy of the vaccine cited as primary barriers for not getting the vaccine. Of particular concern, less than 27% of 18 to 24 year olds, a high risk group, plan on getting the H1N1 vaccine.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Tuesday commended Tanazanian President Jakaya Kikwete on the country's utilization of U.S. aid money and vowed her support for the country's future development projects, during a meeting in Washington, D.C., the Zimbabwean reports. "A severe and persistent five-year drought" is pushing "[m]ore than 23 million people ... towards severe hunger and destitution across East Africa, international aid agency Oxfam has warned as it launches a £9.5 million [about $15 million] emergency appeal," the U.K. Press Association reports (9/29). According to Reuters/New York Times, "Malnutrition is now above emergency levels in some areas and hundreds of thousands of valuable cattle are dying" (Wallis, 9/29).

WHO Asia-Pacific Countries pledge to use artemisinin with other drugs by 2015 to prevent drug-resistance

On Wednesday, nine of the 10 countries in the WHO's Asia-Pacific region "that suffer most" from malaria pledged to phase out the use of artemisinin-only to treat malaria and use it in combination with other drugs by 2015, Reuters reports (Lyn, 9/23).

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on Thursday announced the launch of the Living Proof Project that aims to highlight how U.S. foreign aid contributes to improving global health, the Associated Press reports. Bill Gates said in a statement, "We want to show Americans that their investments in global health are working" (Pace, 9/24).

"The global financial crisis has led to an alarming rate of urban malnutrition in the south of the Central African Republic, where diamond mines have closed as demand for the gems falls, the medical relief group Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) says," Reuters AlertNet reports (Fominyen, 9/24). African Leaders Malaria Alliance launched at U.N. General Assembly

On the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly Wednesday, African heads of state formed a 20-member African Leaders Malaria Alliance with the goal of eliminating deaths from malaria by 2015, the Associated Press writes. "With an estimated 500 million annual cases, Africa is the continent most affected by malaria, accounting for 86 percent of all cases and 91 percent of all malaria deaths worldwide, President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania said at the alliance's launch," according to the news service (9/24).
