Amendment to allow drug importation fails in Senate

A bipartisan plan to allow Americans to buy cheaper prescription drugs from suppliers in other countries, such as Canada, failed Tuesday in the Senate. The Wall Street Journal reports the two top supporters of the plan, Sens. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and John McCain, R-Ariz., said shopping overseas via the Internet and mail-order companies could save consumers up to $80 billion over a decade if their amendment were added to the health overhaul legislation.

MultiCare Health Systems contracts Skanska to expand Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup

Skanska has been contracted by MultiCare Health Systems for the final phase of construction management work for a hospital expansion. The contract amounts to USD 71.4 M, about SEK 500 M, which is included in order bookings for the fourth quarter.

Two-year program designed to enhance patient safety at public hospitals

Kaiser Permanente together with the National Patient Safety Foundation and the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems today announced the "Patient Safety Initiative at America's Public Hospitals." This two-year program is designed to enhance patient safety programs at public hospitals to ensure safe, high-quality care for vulnerable and low-income populations that depend on publicly supported health care institutions for medical care.

The West African Rotavirus Advisory Board is calling on governments to vaccinate children against rotavirus, IRIN reports. At a recent meeting in Dakar, Senegal, which was "financed by GlaxoSmithKline, makers of one of two rotavirus vaccines" the board issued a document recommending that governments "immediately recognize the magnitude of the rotavirus problem and make vaccination against the virus a priority" (12/8).
