Low-cost healthy lifestyle program can prevent excess weight gain in pregnant women

A new study reports that a low-cost healthy lifestyle program, including self-weighing weekly or monthly, by pregnant women with pre-existing overweight can prevent them from gaining too much weight during early pregnancy. The researchers will present the results Sunday at The Endocrine Society's 93rd Annual Meeting in Boston.

Fibre rich diet and healthy lifestyle prevents bowel cancer

According to leading researchers there is more evidence than ever before that fiber-rich foods prevent bowel cancer. They analyzed the most up-to-date research on the disease and said there is now “convincing” evidence that foods containing fiber can offer protection. An earlier 2007 concluded that dietary fiber “probably” cuts the risk of the disease but this new analysis is stronger they say. New evidence includes research that says three servings a day of cereal fiber and whole grains reduce the risk.

Breast cancer and unhealthy lifestyle choices

Figures have shown that more than one in five British women is classified as obese, and research has found those affected are almost 50 per cent more likely to die from breast cancer than women carrying less weight. Studies have shown that obesity in women leads to changes in sex-hormone levels that may trigger estrogen-dependent tumors, which form the majority of cases. Drinking just one large glass of wine a day also increases the chance of developing breast cancer by a fifth, say experts. It is thought alcohol raises levels of estrogen in the body.
