Initial results of MUSIC Trial using PD2i in chronic heart failure patients released

David H. Fater, CEO of Vicor Technologies, Inc., today announced the initial results of a study designed to analyze data from the Merte Subita en Insufficiencia Cardiaca Trial using its PD2i- algorithm and software. Vicor Technologies is a biotechnology company focused on the development of innovative, non-invasive medical devices using its patented, proprietary PD2i- nonlinear algorithm and software.

Study confirms inverse association of increase in BMI with lower brain volumes

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine determined that excess abdominal fat places otherwise healthy, middle-aged people at risk for dementia later in life. Preliminary findings suggest a relationship between obesity and dementia that could lead to promising prevention strategies in the future. Results of this study are published early online in Annals of Neurology, a journal of the American Neurological Association.

A clinical study is underway at Nyack Hospital to evaluate the use of cellphone-based technology to monitor medication adherence in discharged heart failure patients. The study is using the eMedonline telemonitoring system developed by Leap of Faith Technologies to help patients transition from the inpatient to outpatient setting.

Cell Therapeutics reports cardiac safety results from phase II trial of pixantrone in CHOP-R regimen

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. reported today preliminary cardiac safety results from a North American randomized phase II trial which substituted pixantrone for doxorubicin in the standard CHOP-R regimen. Called PIX203, the randomized trial compared CPOP-R directly to CHOP-R in the 1st line treatment of high risk patients with diffuse large B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (DLBCL, NHL).

Loyola conducts heart health-risk assessment and screening program for EMS providers

Research suggests that stress can take its toll on even the toughest first responders. Loyola University Health System is taking steps to protect firefighters and paramedics who risk their lives and perform other heroic measures to help those in need. The organization will offer heart health-risk assessments and screenings to its network of more than 3,000 emergency medical services (EMS) providers. This is part of Loyola's efforts to celebrate its 35th anniversary as an emergency medical services resource hospital.

They've been "medicalized." In the first study of its kind in the current issue of Social Science and Medicine, Brandeis researchers used national data to estimate the costs of these and a handful of other common conditions on escalating U.S. healthcare spending.
