Heart failure (HF) is a condition in which a problem with the structure or function of the heart impairs its ability to supply sufficient blood flow to meet the body's needs. It should not be confused with cardiac arrest or myocardial infarction.

FDA accepts to review sNDA for SPRYCEL for treating adult patients with CML

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has accepted for filing and review the supplemental New Drug Application for SPRYCEL (dasatinib) for the treatment of adult patients with newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia in chronic phase.

First patient enrolled in Boston Scientific's MultiSENSE clinical trial

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced enrollment of the first patient in its MultiSENSE clinical trial. The trial is designed to evaluate multiple physiologic sensors in the Company's COGNIS cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators. Boston Scientific plans to use the trial data to help develop a clinical alert that identifies the early onset of worsening heart failure.

Heart attack death rates drop in hospitals; CDC reports increase in colon cancer screening rate

USA Today: Hospital heart attack death rates fell, according to new Medicare data. "Death rates at 4,569 hospitals that treat Medicare patients who suffer heart attacks fell by almost half a percentage point, from a national average of 16.6% last year to 16.2%. Death rates for most hospitals ranged from about 14.5% to 17.9%. ...

Nile completes dosing in CD-NP Phase II study for acute decompensated heart failure

Nile Therapeutics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel therapeutics for cardiovascular disease, today announced that it has completed the dosing of the last patient in NIL-CDNP-CT005, an open-label, single-blind, placebo-controlled Phase II study of CD-NP in patients with acute decompensated heart failure, or ADHF. The study was designed to provide additional information on the safety and tolerability of CD-NP when infused for up to 72 hours in patients with ADHF and mild to moderate renal insufficiency.

Research is yielding new understanding of the interactions between the heart and the kidneys—particularly the cardiorenal syndrome, in which failure of either organ can lead to failure of the other. Archives of Internal Medicine: The Quality Of Care Provided To Hospitalized Patients At The End of Life - In this study, researchers used a set of quality indicators to assess the end-of-life care and pain management received by 496 patients who died three or more days after admission at the University of California-Los Angeles Medical Center. The authors found "pain assessments (94%) and treatments for pain (95%) and dyspnea [breathing problems] (87%) were performed with fidelity."

Vimpat provides long-term additional partial-onset seizure control when added to broad range of AEDs

New long term data showed that Vimpat- (lacosamide) C-V provided sustained reduction in seizure frequency for up to five years when used as an add-on treatment for uncontrolled partial onset seizures in adults with epilepsy. In addition post-hoc exploratory analyses showed that adjunctive lacosamide treatment reduced partial-onset seizure frequency and improved responder rates when added to a broad range of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) including both traditional sodium channel-blocking agents and those that act on non-sodium channel-targets.
