Evidence for the safety and efficacy of influenza vaccines in the over 65s is poor, despite the fact that vaccination has been recommended for the prevention of influenza in older people for the past 40 years. These are the conclusions of a new Cochrane Systematic Review.

Circumcision: Risky by untrained providers with inappropriate equipment

How safe is circumcision? A systematic review, published in the open access journal BMC Urology has found that neonatal and infant circumcision by trained staff rarely results in problems. Risks can be higher among older boys, especially when undertaken by untrained providers with inappropriate equipment.

Healthcare for detained immigrants: Language barriers, costs, and government and institutional perceptions

Over 300,000 immigrants a year are detained by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (USICE), a branch of the Department of Homeland Security. These immigrants are held at facilities run by, or under contract with, USICE. In recent years, studies by community-based organizations, the government, and the media have identified systemic deficiencies in the provision of healthcare to immigrant detainees and have described incidents of inadequate medical treatment, suffering and, in some cases, death.

SafeBridge Consultants validates improved hygiene air sampling and analytical method for naproxen sodium

SafeBridge® Consultants, Inc. headquartered in Mountain View, California announced today that its industrial hygiene analytical laboratory has recently validated an industrial hygiene air sampling and analytical method with improved analytical sensitivity for measurement of naproxen sodium on filters. SafeBridge now has a validated method that will detect as low as 20 picograms per filter in an air sample collected on appropriate media. This limit of detection is four (4) to five (5) times lower than methods available from other commercial laboratories.

$1.2B needed to aid women, children in 28 countries 'in crisis,' UNICEF says

UNICEF on Thursday launched a $1.2 billion appeal aimed at providing "life saving emergency assistance to millions of children and women in dire need," VOA News reports (Schlein, 2/4). "The appeal is part of UNICEF's Humanitarian Action Report 2010, released in Geneva ... which spotlights the desperate situation of children and women in 28 countries and territories facing deep humanitarian crises," the U.N.
