NIRS-IVUS imaging identifies patients and plaques vulnerable to subsequent adverse cardiac events

Results from the Lipid-Rich Plaque study demonstrate the correlation between the presence of non-flow-limiting, non-intervened upon, lipid-rich plaques detected by NIRS-IVUS imaging and the development of a major adverse cardiac event from a de novo culprit lesion at both the patient level (vulnerable patients) and segment level (vulnerable plaques) within 24 months post intravascular imaging.

Clinical study shows efficacy, safety of novel drug-eluting stent with improved radiographic visibility

This first randomized clinical study of a polymer-coated zotarolimus-eluting stent (Resolute Onyx) that utilizes a novel thin-strutted metallic platform allowing for better x-ray visibility was shown to be non-inferior to an ultrathin-strutted bioresorbable polymer-coated sirolimus-eluting stent (Orsiro) that uses a cobalt-chromium strut platform.

Most patients who underwent transcatheter valve replacement experience prosthesis-patient mismatch

In the largest multi-institutional study to date, led by researchers from Penn Medicine, the team found that among patients who underwent a transcatheter aortic valve replacement, a high number experienced severe and moderate cases of prosthesis-patient mismatch--meaning the implanted heart valve is too small for the patient which can lead to inadequate blood flow.

Study highlights disconnection between patient satisfaction scores and online physician reviews

Physicians who receive negative reviews online do not receive similar responses in rigorous patient satisfaction surveys, according to new Mayo Clinic research in Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Study reveals link of male-pattern baldness and premature graying with early heart disease

New research presented at the 69th Annual Conference of the Cardiological Society of India (CSI) indicated that premature greying and male-pattern baldness are linked to a greater than fivefold risk of heart disease before the age of 40. The study also suggested obesity is linked to a fourfold risk of early heart disease.

SENIOR trial: Shorter DAPT combined with Synergy stent superior to BMS in elderly patients

Elderly patients undergoing PCI often receive bare-metal stents (BMS) instead of drug-eluting stents (DES) to shorten the duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) and reduce bleeding risk. However, results from the SENIOR trial found that compared with BMS, shorter DAPT combined with the Synergy bioabsorbable polymer DES leads to less adverse events without increasing bleeding risk.
