Warfarin therapy provides substantial protection for elder patients with atrial fibrillation

Warfarin (an oral anticoagulant) therapy for patients with atrial fibrillation - the most common type of significant heart rhythm disorder - appears to be most beneficial for the oldest patients, for those who have had a prior stroke and for patients with multiple risk factors for stroke, according to a new study by Kaiser Permanente and Massachusetts General Hospital researchers.

Health Canada issues marketing approval for NeuroVasx's cPAX Aneurysm Treatment System

NeuroVasx, Inc., a medical device company that develops technologies for the treatment of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke, announced today that it has received approval to market its cPAX Aneurysm Treatment System in Canada from Health Canada's Therapeutic Products Directorate. Phase III RE-LY study results to be presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress

Results of the Phase III RE-LY(R) (Randomized Evaluation of Long-Term Anticoagulant Therapy, Warfarin, Compared to Dabigatran) study will be presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress in Barcelona on Sunday, Aug. 30. The primary objective of RE-LY was to assess the safety and efficacy of the investigational oral direct thrombin inhibitor, dabigatran etexilate, against the current standard therapy, warfarin, for the prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).
