Shire receives European approval for FOSRENOL

Shire plc, the global specialty biopharmaceutical company, today announced it has received approval through the European Mutual Recognition Procedure for an extension to the current indication for FOSRENOL(R) (lanthanum carbonate), paving the way to make the non-calcium, non-resin phosphate binder available throughout the EU to control hyperphosphataemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients who are not on dialysis with a serum phosphorus level greather than or equal to 1.78mmol/L (5.5mg/dL).

FDA issues clearance for Lumenis' PolyScope Flexible Endoscope

Lumenis Ltd., a global developer, manufacturer and seller of laser, light-based and radiofrequency devices for surgical, aesthetic, and ophthalmic applications, announced that on September 30th, 2009 the FDA issued a 510K to Lumenis stating that the PolyScope Flexible Endoscope can now be sold in the United States.

Isotechnika Pharma reports voclosporin Phase 2/3 clinical trial results at the AAO meeting

The issue of Medicare payment cuts to doctors still looms, causing some physicians to shun Medicare patients and others to push for greater reform. Many worry that doctors may boycott the program if the planned 21 percent cut in payment rates goes through in 2010 while others complain about low Medicare reimbursement rates for certain procedures and geographic areas.

Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ:LIFE) today announced results for its third quarter ended September 30, 2009. Non-GAAP revenue for the third quarter was $805 million, an increase of 3 percent over third quarter revenue of $784 million in 2008, as if Invitrogen and Applied Biosystems had been combined.

Philippines calls for help to address disease outbreak in storms' aftermath

The WHO on Thursday said the Philippines is requesting "international help to fight a deadly outbreak of an infectious disease following two devastating tropical storms," Agence France-Presse reports. Parts of Manila, which are still flooded almost four weeks after Tropical Storm Ketsana hit, are experiencing an outbreak of the bacterial infection, leptospirosis (10/22).
