Elixir Medical Corporation, a developer of products that combine state-of-the-art medical devices with advanced pharmaceuticals, announced enrollment initiation for a 120-patient, international pivotal clinical study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the DESolve Novolimus Eluting Bioresorbable Coronary Scaffold System designed to resorb in the body within 1 to 2 years after implantation and return the patients' coronary vessel to de novo state.

AARP poll: Iowa, Florida Republicans disagree with candidates on Medicare cuts

In Iowa, the AARP polled 400 past Iowa primary voters on Oct. 17 -18 who said they would attend the Iowa caucuses. The Florida poll, which was similar to the one conducted in Iowa and some other states, involved 500 respondents. Florida has the largest number of retirees in the nation.

Pennsylvania General Assembly passes bill banning texting for all drivers

The National Safety Council congratulates the Pennsylvania General Assembly for passage of Senate Bill 314, which makes sending text messages while driving a violation for all drivers. The bill will become law with Gov. Tom Corbett's signature, and the law will go into effect 120 days after it is signed.

Just couple of glasses of wine a day could raise risk of breast cancer: Study

According to a new major study just two glasses of a wine a day can increase the risk of breast cancer among women by 50%. Researchers also warn that women who drink regularly in their 20s and 30s are far more likely to develop breast cancer in later life, regardless of whether they reduce their alcohol consumption.

State roundup: Ga., Minn. move slowly on exchanges

The entire Massachusetts congressional delegation is asking CMS to preserve the level of safety net funding and provider payments as the state tries to renew its Medicaid waiver. "We are concerned that changes proposed by CMS could significantly threaten payments to Massachusetts health care providers providing care for the most vulnerable populations," Sens. John Kerry and Scott Brown and the 10 House members in the state's delegation wrote.

A new study found that those with chronic back pain might benefit from regular yoga. Three months of weekly yoga classes eased back pain more than the usual course of care — an informative back pain booklet said researchers. Even a year later, patients with chronic back pain who had participated in yoga classes reported less pain than those who hadn't been assigned the classes.

Majority of college students could identify risk factors linked with eating disorders

They're the prime demographic for developing eating disorders, yet new research out of the University of Cincinnati suggests that it could be difficult for college students to notice the warning signs. On Oct. 31, Ashlee Hoffman, a UC doctoral student in health promotion and education, will present her research, titled, "University Students' Knowledge of An Ability to Identify Disordered Eating, Warning Signs and Risk Factors," at the American Public Health Association's 139th annual meeting and exposition in Washington, DC.
