Plexxikon Inc. today announced promising preclinical data from in vivo Alzheimer's Disease studies demonstrating a dramatic reduction in activated microglia in the brains of very old (22 months) 3xTG-AD mice, a triple transgenic model for Alzheimer's Disease. This reduction of activated microglia led to significantly improved learning in the treated group.

Mylan Inc. today announced plans to acquire Bioniche Pharma Holdings Limited, a privately held, global injectable pharmaceutical company for $550 million in cash. EpiCept Corporation has amended the exercise price of its Series A Warrants and Series B Warrants sold in June 2010 from $1.57 per share to $1.64 per share. The exercise price was amended by Amendment No.1 dated as of July 8, 2010, to the Securities Purchase Agreement between EpiCept and each of the purchasers signatory thereto, which amended the Securities Purchase Agreement dated June 25, 2010 between EpiCept and each of the purchasers signatory thereto.

Telecare management intervention improves pain, depression in cancer patients

Cancer patients receiving care in geographically dispersed urban and rural oncology practices who participated in a program that included telephone-based care management and home-based automated symptom monitoring had greater improvement in pain and depression compared to patients who received usual care, according to a study in the July 14 issue of JAMA.

New prediction tool estimates risk for recurrence after breast-conserving surgery in DCIS patients

The decision regarding treatment following breast-conserving surgery for patients diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in-situ (DCIS) has long been an area of discussion and confusion for patients and physicians alike. While the mortality rates for DCIS remain low, the risk of local recurrence in the breast is high. Standard treatments following surgery include radiation therapy and hormone treatment. While both treatments have been proven to lower the risk of recurrence in the breast, neither has been shown to improve survival, and both carry potentially serious risks.
