A peptic ulcer, also known as PUD or peptic ulcer disease, is an ulcer (defined as mucosal erosions equal to or greater than 0.5 cm) of an area of the gastrointestinal tract that is usually acidic and thus extremely painful.

Study: Short-term use of COX-2 inhibitors may help prevent gastric cancer

Elevated expression of COX-2 is observed in a wide variety of human malignancies, including gastric cancer. Long-term high dose COX-2 inhibitors can inhibit gastric carcinogenesis in animal models, but the possible life-threatening cardiovascular adverse events limit its popular application. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the optimal intervention point of COX-2 inhibitors for inhibiting H. pylori-associated gastric carcinogenesis.

Shire receives European approval for FOSRENOL

Shire plc, the global specialty biopharmaceutical company, today announced it has received approval through the European Mutual Recognition Procedure for an extension to the current indication for FOSRENOL(R) (lanthanum carbonate), paving the way to make the non-calcium, non-resin phosphate binder available throughout the EU to control hyperphosphataemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients who are not on dialysis with a serum phosphorus level greather than or equal to 1.78mmol/L (5.5mg/dL).

Careful follow-up after eradication therapy for peptic ulcer needed

Although it has been demonstrated that Helicobacter pylori causes gastric cancer, it is still controversial that whether H. pylori eradication therapy is effective in primary prevention of gastric cancer. Results from COGENT clinical trial presented at TCT symposium

Results from a late breaking clinical trial called COGENT demonstrate that the combination of giving patients clopidogrel, a blood thinner commonly prescribed to patients with cardiovascular disease, and stomach medicines such as omeprazole, known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), did not lead to adverse events, as some prior studies had suggested.

Early treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection may prevent cancer

Based on research using a new mouse model of gastritis and stomach cancer, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) say that prompt treatment of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections reverses damage to the lining of the stomach that can lead to cancer.
