Research project to improve early diagnosis and treatment of mild traumatic brain injuries

With financial backing from a leading nonprofit supporter of military medical research, medical device manufacturer Neuro Kinetics, Inc. (www.neuro-kinetics.com) said today that it is collaborating with the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and three other military medical facilities in a comprehensive research project to improve early diagnosis and treatment of mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI).

Sangamo BioSciences awarded a grant to develop zinc finger nuclease-based stem cell therapy for AIDS

Sangamo BioSciences, Inc. announced today that the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) has granted a $14.5 million Disease Team Research Award to develop an AIDS-related lymphoma therapy based on the application of its zinc finger nuclease (ZFN) gene-editing technology in stem cells.

NIH awards The Tufts CTSI and Tufts University four supplemental grants

The Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and Tufts University today announced they are the recipients of four supplemental grant awards from the National Institutes of Health. These new awards, totaling approximately $1.73 million, are supplements to the original Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) grant, UL1 RR025752 that Tufts University received in 2008 from the National Center for Research Resources.

Novel protein responsible for changing DNA structure and silencing the expression of genes identified

A study published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) by a team of scientists headed by Professors Hélène Bierne and Pascale Cossart from the Pasteur Institute, in collaboration with colleagues form the CNRS and the French Agricultural Research Institute (INRA), identified a novel protein, BAHD1, which is responsible for changing DNA structure and silencing the expression of genes.

APC enzyme may be effective for treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

A chemical cousin of a drug currently used to treat sepsis dramatically slows the progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, in mice. The results offer a bit of good news in efforts to develop a therapy to stop or slow the progression of a disease that generally kills its victims within just a few years.

AGH Researchers to study the impact of biofilm infections on the success of orthopaedic procedures

Researchers from Allegheny General Hospital's (AGH) Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Center for Genomic Sciences have launched dual groundbreaking studies that may help determine the cause of two common, hard-to-treat problems experienced by patients who undergo orthopedic surgery: a joint replacement that becomes infected and a bone fracture that will not heal properly.

NIH awards $1.4 million Small Business Technology Transfer grant to BloodCenter of Wisconsin

BloodCenter of Wisconsin (BCW) today announced that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a $1.4 million Small Business Technology Transfer grant to fund continued research into the deployment of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to enhance safety and reduce hospital costs related to the collection, manufacture and transfusion of blood products. The NIH grant allows the first-ever research into the potential clinical and financial benefits of RFID technology for automatic identification, tracking, and status monitoring of blood and blood products across the entire transfusion medicine supply chain.

UC Riverside researchers create stable "abnormal N-heterocyclic carbenes"

Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have successfully created in the laboratory a class of carbenes, highly reactive molecules, used to make catalysts - substances that facilitate chemical reactions. Until now, chemists believed these carbenes, called "abnormal N-heterocyclic carbenes" or aNHCs, were impossible to make.

Researchers develop a new test process for cancer drugs

It is very difficult to predict whether a cancer drug will help an individual patient: only around one third of drugs will work directly in a given patient. Researchers at the Heinz Nixdorf Chair for Medical Electronics at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) have developed a new test process for cancer drugs.
