Hospitalized veterans receive therapeutic values through HHV's arts & crafts kits

It was December 1975. A relatively young organization called Help Hospitalized Veterans had been quietly delivering arts & crafts kits to VA and military hospitals for over four years and was about to reach a milestone – distribution of its 1,000,000th craft kit. Bob Hope, legendary actor, golfer and advocate for veterans presented the kit to Vietnam veteran Eugene Gardner.

Genomes of two E. coli bacteria strains sequenced and analyzed

An international team of researchers from the United States, Korea, and France has sequenced and analyzed the genomes of two important laboratory strains of E. coli bacteria, one used to study evolution and the other to produce proteins for basic research or practical applications. The findings will help guide future research and will also open a window to a deeper understanding of classical research that is the foundation of our understanding of basic molecular biology and genetics.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today issued a second emergency use authorization (EUA) to Focus Diagnostics, the infectious disease diagnostics business of Quest Diagnostics Incorporated, for its 2009 H1N1 influenza virus test. With the EUA, Focus Diagnostics is the only company in the U.S. to offer test kits for detecting the pandemic 2009 H1N1 virus that the FDA has authorized for emergency use by CLIA high-complexity labs, which include certain hospital and regional labs.
