Smith & Nephew to present comprehensive portfolio of advanced wound management products at Annual Clinical Symposium

The Advanced Wound Management Division of Smith & Nephew, Inc., a subsidiary of Smith & Nephew Plc (LSE: SN; NYSE: SNN), announced today that clinicians will present a total of 20 clinical posters featuring its Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) Systems and ALLEVYN(TM) AG, ALLEVYN AG Gentle, ACTICOAT(TM) and IODOSORB(TM) advanced wound dressings during the 24th Annual Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin and Wound Care's poster session. Study compares effects of clin-BPO 2.5% and clin-BPO 5% on epidermal functions

Dermatologists agree that topical fixed-combination products containing clindamycin (clin) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) are effective in the treatment of acne. However, products containing BPO concentrations at 5% or higher may limit use due to associated dryness and irritation in some patients.

NIH awards $3.7 million to Johns Hopkins scientists for research on stem cells developed from ALS patients' skin

Johns Hopkins scientists have been awarded a $3.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to learn more about the nerve and muscle-wasting disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) using stem cells developed from ALS patients' skin. The award, given over a two-year span, will be shared with three other laboratories, including one at Harvard University and two at Columbia University.

Northwest Biotherapeutics announces long-term data from Phase I and Phase I/II clinical trials of DCVax-Brain

Northwest Biotherapeutics, Inc. today announced further long-term follow-up data, for the period from January through September 2009, from its prior Phase I and Phase I/II clinical trials conducted at UCLA with DCVax®-Brain in patients with Glioblastoma multiforme ("GBM"). GBM is the most rapid and lethal type of brain cancer. During the update period, only one of the twenty patients treated with DCVax®-Brain (in addition to standard of care) died, and that patient had survived for nearly 7 years (80.5 months).
