Kenneth D. Steinsapir receives rare USPTO patent for Microdroplet BOTOX

Kenneth D. Steinsapir, M.D., has been issued a rare patent (US 7,846,457 B2) by The United States Patent and Trademark Office for the invention of a breakthrough method for administering cosmetic botulinum toxin. The patent for Microdroplet botulinum toxin, a nonsurgical cosmetic facial treatment that improves upon standard BOTOX treatments, was officially approved on December 7, 2010.

Robot-assisted surgery dramatically improves outcomes in patients with uterine, endometrial, and cervical cancer, said researchers at the Jewish General Hospital's Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research in Montreal. Moreover, because of fewer post-operative complications and shorter hospital stays, robotic procedures also cost less.

In the first update of the American Geriatrics Society and the British Geriatric Society's guidelines on preventing falls in older persons since 2001, they now recommend that all interventions for preventing falls should include an exercise component and that a number of new assessments should be used, including; feet and footwear, fear of falling, and ability to carry out daily living activities.

Minimal invasive valve surgery provides better outcomes in older patients: Mount Sinai study

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery has just published a study conducted at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Miami Beach reporting the outcomes of minimally invasive valve surgery versus traditional median sternotomy in patients 75 years of age or older. Minimally invasive valve surgery at Mount Sinai is performed through a small, 2-inch incision on the right side of the chest, and this was compared with the same kind of valve surgery done through a breastbone splitting approach.

A new study published online in the British Medical Journal explores the relative safety of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), commonly used to treat joint and muscle aches and pain and concludes that NSAIDs significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular events in patients who take them regularly.

Now, one year later, Ms. Ajuste will undergo open-heart surgery at Montefiore, The University Hospital and Academic Medical Center for Einstein, to correct the defect.
