SOFAR licenses Immersion's TouchSense haptics technology for use in ALF-X telesurgical robot system

Immersion Corporation, the leading developer and licensor of haptics technology, today announced that SOFAR S.p.A., a leading Italian manufacturer of medical devices for minimally invasive surgery, has obtained a license to Immersion's TouchSense haptics technology for use in its ALF-X (Advanced Laparoscopy through Force Reflection) telesurgical robot system.

Updates in Surgery, the official journal of SIC to be published by Springer in English

From June 2010, Springer will publish Updates in Surgery, the official journal of the Italian Society of Surgery. The journal, previously a bilingual Italian-English publication, is now published four times a year in English only. The content will be available in print for the society members and it will also be electronically available on Springer's platform www.springerlink.com.

The Texas Heart Institute (THI) at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital has announced another major milestone in improved patient care, after performing its 1000th carotid artery stent procedure. Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has emerged as a less invasive treatment for stroke-causing blockages in the carotid artery, meaning patients generally have fewer risks for complications, shorter hospital stays and recovery times and less expense.

Cancer patients who've been told to rest and avoid exercise can - and should - find ways to be physically active both during and after treatment, according to new national guidelines. Kathryn Schmitz, PhD, MPH, an associate professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and a member of the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, will present these guidelines at an educational session at the 2010 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, aimed at making cancer exercise rehabilitation programs as common as those offered to people who have had heart attacks or undergone cardiac surgery.
