Siemens to distribute Rcadia's COR Analyzer System

Rcadia Medical Imaging and Siemens Healthcare have entered into an agreement for Siemens to distribute Rcadia's COR Analyzer® System. The COR Analyzer's ability to identify stenotic lesions in Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography (cCTA) studies in combination with Siemens' Syngo®.via CT Cardio-Vascular Engine provides a comprehensive solution for evaluating suspected cardiac patients. The integration of both systems realizes a seamless workflow with enhanced productivity.

Micell initiates enrollment in DESSOLVE I clinical trial of MiStent DES

Micell Technologies,™ Inc. today announced it has enrolled at Mercy Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, the first patient in DESSOLVE I (DES with Sirolimus and a bioabsorbable pOLymer for the treatment of patients with de noVo lEsions in the native coronary arteries), a first-in-human clinical trial of the company's investigational MiStent™ Drug Eluting Coronary Stent System (MiStent DES).

Study reports increased CT usage in emergency departments

A new study reports that the use of computed tomography (CT) in the nation's emergency departments is growing exponentially. If the growth trend continues, by 2011, nearly 20 percent of all emergency department (ED) visits may involve a CT exam. The results of this study were presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and published online and in the journal Radiology.

Eckert & Ziegler enters exclusive sales agreement with Zyklotron for Fluorodeoxyglucose

Eckert & Ziegler Strahlen- und Medizintechnik AG, a company specializing in special compounds for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, via its subsidiary company Eckert & Ziegler f-con Deutschland GmbH closed an exclusive sales agreement with the Karlsruhe-based ZAG Zyklotron AG for the regular delivery of Fluorodeoxyglucose (18F) (FDG). FDG is used in the context of the so called Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for the safe and quick recognition of even the smallest tumour foci.

Potassium citrate effective for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis: Study

The Western diet creates an acidic environment in the body that removes calcium from bones and may contribute to the development of osteoporosis. Healthy adults who consume the standard US diet sustain a chronic, low-grade state of acidosis that worsens with age as kidney function declines, limiting urinary acid excretion. Reto Krapf, MD (University of Basel, in Bruderholz/Basel, Switzerland) and colleagues designed a study to see if daily alkali as potassium citrate supplement tablets might neutralize these effects.

FDA identifies promising steps to enhance safety of CT scans

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been investigating reports that patients undergoing computed tomography (CT) brain perfusion scans were accidently exposed to excess radiation. The FDA found that when properly used, the CT scanners did not malfunction. Instead, it is likely that the improper use of the scanners resulted in these overdoses. However, the FDA has identified a series or promising steps to enhance the safety of these procedures. These steps could reduce the likelihood of radiation overexposure in the event of improper use of the CT scanners.

Keeping radiation dose in check is a top safety concern for today's hospitals, particularly in computed tomography, which has undergone some significant technological advances in the last ten years. The down side is that CT delivers some of the highest radiation doses in diagnostic radiology.

BioInvent receives FDA IND clearance for BI-204 Phase II trial in cardiovascular disease

BioInvent International AB today announces IND clearance from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to initiate a Phase II study for BI-204. BI-204 is a human monoclonal antibody that specifically targets oxidized forms of a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) which has been linked to increased inflammatory processes leading to plaque formation in the blood vessel walls. BI-204 is being co-developed with Genentech for secondary prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
