Quark enters licensing option agreement with Novartis for p53 temporary inhibitor siRNA drug QPI-1002

Quark Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a world leader in the discovery and development of RNAi-based therapeutics, today announced that it has granted Novartis an option to obtain an exclusive worldwide license to develop and commercialize its p53 temporary inhibitor siRNA drug QPI-1002, currently the subject of a Phase II clinical trial.

FDA grants orphan drug designation to NephRx's lead product NX001

NephRx Corporation today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted orphan drug designation to its lead product NX001 for the prevention of delayed graft function in renal transplant recipients. NX001 is a kidney growth factor peptide that has demonstrated good safety and promising efficacy in two animal models of acute renal failure.

ImPACKD, The Kidney Foundation of Canada launch online resource for CKD patients

Before today, millions of Canadians living with chronic kidney disease did not have a strong online advocacy presence. Improving Patient Advocacy in Chronic Kidney Disease and The Kidney Foundation of Canada are now joining forces to provide an effective resource. Together, they are launching www.impackd.ca, a microsite of www.kidney.ca that is specifically designed for Canadians affected by chronic kidney disease.

Cancer Institute of New Jersey expands 'Quality and Outcomes in Cancer Care Research Program'

Looking to gain further understanding about the impact of cancer on patients and families, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) is expanding its Quality and Outcomes in Cancer Care (QOCC) Research Program by welcoming nationally-recognized population science researcher Sharon Manne, PhD. Dr. Manne, who is the recipient of major grant awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for her work in behavioral science, was most recently at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. CINJ is a Center of Excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Massachusetts General Hospital implants Levacor Ventricular Assist Device

World Heart Corporation, a developer of mechanical circulatory systems, announced today that the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. has successfully implanted its first Levacor™ Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). Mass General is the fifth implanting site nationwide in the Levacor VAD Bridge-to-Transplant (BTT) Study. This is the eleventh implant with the Levacor VAD since the inception of the BTT study.

Belatacept study data to be presented at 23rd International Congress of The Transplantation Society

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company announced today that belatacept, an investigational selective T cell co-stimulation blocker being studied for use in solid organ transplantation, will be the subject of seven oral clinical presentations related to kidney transplantation at the 23rd International Congress of The Transplantation Society, being held August 15-19, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In total, 18 abstracts from company-sponsored studies will be presented during the congress.

New T cell engineering approach can improve success rate of immune-cell therapies

Clinical trials using patients' own immune cells to target tumors have yielded promising results. However, this approach usually works only if the patients also receive large doses of drugs designed to help immune cells multiply rapidly, and those drugs have life-threatening side effects. Now a team of MIT engineers has devised a way to deliver the necessary drugs by smuggling them on the backs of the cells sent in to fight the tumor. That way, the drugs reach only their intended targets, greatly reducing the risk to the patient.
