Symphogen to present second-generation Sympress platform at ESACT conference

Symphogen, a private biopharmaceutical company developing superior antibody therapeutics to treat cancer, infectious and autoimmune diseases, announced today that second-generation enhancements to the company's SYMPRESS manufacturing and quality control platform will be presented in an oral presentation entitled "Recombinant antibody mixtures; optimization of cell line generation and single-batch manufacturing processes" by Dr. Søren K. Rasmussen, Principal Scientist, Symphogen at the upcoming European Society for Animal Cell Technology conference in Vienna on May 17, 2011.

NIH funds Rice University study of new materials for growing replacement heart valves

A team of bioengineers from Rice University is bringing a promising new strategy for growing replacement heart valves closer to reality, thanks to a four-year, $1.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The team hopes to use gel-like materials to generate three-dimensional patterns called scaffolds that can simultaneously mimic the complex structural and physical properties of heart-valve tissues and guide the behavior of tissue-forming cells.

New ‘nanotech’ weapon against drug-resistant superbugs

Scientists at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) and IBM Research – Almaden have developed the first biodegradable polymer nanoparticles to combat drug-resistant superbugs, such as Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These nanoparticles can selectively kill the bacteria without destroying healthy red blood cells, and being biodegradable, have great potential to treat infectious diseases in the body. This was reported today in the leading scientific journal, Nature Chemistry [(2011) DOI: 10.1038/nchem.1012].
