Gene therapy can offer a cure for a rare condition that causes children’s immune systems to fail. In this rare condition, known as Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), inherited genetic mutations mean that babies are unable to fight off infection, severely limiting their chances of surviving more than a few years. Blood cancer drug trial results questioned by FDA

U.S. drug reviewers might limit the use of a Seattle Genetics Inc’s experimental blood cancer drug due to the narrow scope of its clinical trials. According to papers released Tuesday by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it requests an advisory panel to consider the drug, under the proposed trade name Adcetris known chemically as brentuximab vedotin, for use in previously treated patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL).

Dendritic cells secrete signal molecule that contributes to pathogenesis of atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of cardiovascular disease, and results from chronic inflammation of arterial vessel walls. An international collaboration led by Professor Christian Weber of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich and Privatdozentin Alma Zernecke of Würzburg University now shows that dendritic cells stimulate this process by derailing a mechanism that normally acts as a brake on immune reactions.
