Johnson & Johnson announces financial results for the third quarter of 2009

Johnson & Johnson today announced sales of $15.1 billion for the third quarter of 2009, a decrease of 5.3% as compared to the third quarter of 2008. Operational results declined 2.8% and the negative impact of currency was 2.5%. Domestic sales declined 8.1%, while international sales declined 2.5%, reflecting operational growth of 2.4% and a negative currency impact of 4.9%.

The global diagnostics industry has witnessed strong growth over the past few years. According to Frost & Sullivan, the diagnostics and monitoring sectors are poised to present more growth opportunities. According to Nitin Naik, Vice President of Frost & Sullivan's Asia Pacific Medical Technologies Division, the diagnostics and monitoring sectors in Asia Pacific are projected to provide more growth opportunities on the basis of the technology spending being channelled in these areas (80 percent).

Orion Genomics enters collaboration and license agreement with Novartis Pharma

Orion Genomics today announced that it has entered into a multi-year collaboration and license agreement with the molecular diagnostics unit of Novartis Pharma AG. The first clinical trials to test whether the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine can safely elicit a protective immune response in pregnant women launched yesterday, and a trial to conduct the same test in HIV-infected children and youth will begin next week.

Study finds BSGI to be a cost-effective breast diagnostic imaging modality

Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI), a molecular breast imaging technique with comparable sensitivity to breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for detecting breast carcinoma when used in pre-surgical planning for patients with known cancer diagnoses and is substantially less expensive than MRI, according to findings presented today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology Breast Cancer Symposium in San Francisco, California.
