Genencor launches Accellerase DUET at the 15th Annual National Ethanol Conference in Orlando

Genencor, a division of Danisco A/S, today introduced Accellerase® DUET at the Renewable Fuels Association's 15th Annual National Ethanol Conference in Orlando, Fla. This product is the latest generation in the company's line of enzymes used to convert biomass into sugars, a critical step in the production of cellulosic ethanol and other advanced biofuels and biochemicals from non-food feedstocks.

Sudden deaths attributed to cocaine use; drug remains a growing health problem in Europe

Forensic pathologists have shown that over three per cent of all sudden deaths in south-west Spain are related to the use of cocaine. They believe their findings can be extrapolated to much of the rest of Europe, indicating that cocaine use is a growing public health problem in Europe and that there is no such thing as "safe" recreational use of small amounts of the drug.

Controlled release pills and capsules with dose dumping tendency should be tested

Controlled release pills and capsules that show a tendency in the standard laboratory test toward "dose dumping" - releasing their medicine in a faster and potentially unsafe manner in patients who have consumed alcohol - should be withheld from the market until proven safe with testing in people. PSC activation mechanisms help develop novel therapeutic approaches for pancreatic fibrosis

Fibrosis is a key feature of chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. The extensive deposition of extracellular matrix proteins fosters the development of an exocrine and endocrine organ insufficiency, and accelerates progression of the tumour. Pancreatic stellate cells (PSC) are the principal effector cells in pancreatic fibrosis. They are activated by profibrogenic mediators, which include, for example, cytokines and ethanol metabolites.
