BioMarin provides update on PEG-PAL Phase 2 clinical study for phenylketonuria

BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. announced today an update in the Phase 2 clinical study of PEG-PAL (PEGylated recombinant phenylalanine ammonia lyase) for the treatment of phenylketonuria (PKU). BioMarin reports $0.5 million GAAP net loss for second-quarter 2010

BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. today announced financial results for the second quarter of 2010. GAAP net loss was $0.5 million ($0.01 per diluted share) for the second quarter of 2010, compared to GAAP net income of $1.3 million ($0.01 per diluted share) for the second quarter of 2009. Non-GAAP net income was $8.6 million ($0.08 per diluted share) for the second quarter of 2010, compared to non-GAAP net income of $9.0 million ($0.09 per diluted share) for the second quarter of 2009.

According to the new report entitled Treatment Algorithms in Ulcerative Colitis, surveyed gastroenterologists most often prescribe Humira for ulcerative colitis for patients with loss of response, intolerance or no response to Centocor Ortho Biotech's Remicade.

Study: hGH linked to PROLOR's CTP technology increases half-life, bioactivity

PROLOR Biotech, Inc., a company developing next generation biobetter therapeutic proteins, today reported publication of a preclinical study in the current on-line edition of the journal Endocrinology showing that human growth hormone (hGH) linked to PROLOR's carboxyl terminal peptide (CTP) technology has significantly increased half-life and bioactivity compared to commercially available hGH. The publication, which is authored by PROLOR researchers, will also be included in the September print edition of Endocrinology.

Study uses text messages to increase medication compliance in adolescent diabetes patients

Jennifer Dyer, MD, MPH, an endocrinologist at Nationwide Children's Hospital, has developed and completed a pilot study that uses weekly, customized text messages to remind adolescent diabetes patients about their personal treatment activities. At the conclusion of the study, Dr. Dyer found an increase in overall treatment adherence and improved blood glucose levels.

FDA clears ZOLL's new Propaq MD Monitor/Defibrillator

ZOLL Medical Corporation, a manufacturer of medical devices and related software solutions, announced today that it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to market and begin distribution of the new Propaq® MD Monitor/Defibrillator that was developed specifically to meet the special needs of military customers and air medical operations worldwide. Development of this product was a joint undertaking between the Department of Defense and a cooperative arrangement between Welch Allyn and ZOLL.

This compares to net income of $11.0 million, or $.97 per diluted common share for the second quarter of 2009. Year-to-date, the Company has generated net income of $18.4 million or $1.88 per diluted common share in 2010, compared to $21.1 million or $1.82 per diluted common share in the first six months of 2009.

Scientists unveil nanoparticle for photoacoustic imaging

Spotting a single cancerous cell that has broken free from a tumor and is traveling through the bloodstream to colonize a new organ might seem like finding a needle in a haystack. But a new imaging technique from the University of Washington is a first step toward making this possible.UW researchers have developed a multifunctional nanoparticle that eliminates the background noise, enabling a more precise form of medical imaging - essentially erasing the haystack, so the needle shines through. A successful demonstration with photoacoustic imaging was reported today (July 27) in the journal Nature Communications.

Researchers examine risk of serious complications associated with bariatric procedure

An examination of hospital complication rates of bariatric surgery for more than 15,000 patients in Michigan finds that the frequency of serious complications is relatively low and is inversely associated with hospital and surgeon procedural volume, according to a study in the July 28 issue of JAMA.
