STSI researchers develop a small wireless device that detects abnormal, dangerous heart rhythms

Research by the Scripps Translational Science Institute (STSI) has found that a small adhesive wireless device worn on the chest for up to two weeks does a better job detecting abnormal and potentially dangerous heart rhythms than the Holter monitor, which is typically used for 24 hours and has been the standard of care for more than 50 years.

Healthcare Trust of America closes $156 million of acquisitions in fourth quarter 2013

Healthcare Trust of America, Inc. announced today that it had closed approximately $156 million of acquisitions in the fourth quarter of 2013. The fourth quarter acquisitions were highlighted by the agreement to acquire an eight medical office building portfolio from a regional developer in Florida for $141 million, $127 million of which closed in December (the "Florida Portfolio").

Walgreen's net earnings increase $695M to 68.3% in fiscal 2014 first quarter

Walgreen Co. today announced earnings and sales results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2014 ended Nov. 30. Net earnings determined in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for the fiscal 2014 first quarter were $695 million, a 68.3 percent increase from $413 million in the year-ago quarter.

Nearly two-thirds of nation's leading health care executives positive about health care reform

Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of the nation's leading health care executives say they believe the health care system will be somewhat or significantly better by 2020 than it is today as a result of national health care reform. Additionally, 93 percent believe that the quality of care provided by their own hospital or health system will improve during that time period.

Vast majority of women who have experienced gender-based violence remain uncounted: Study

Findings from a new global study suggest that estimates of gender-based violence prevalence based on health systems data or on police reports may underestimate the actual total prevalence by 11- to 128-fold. Led by Tia Palermo, PhD, Assistant Professor in Public Health and the Department of Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, the study is soon to be published online in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
