LSUHSC's Peggy A. Honoré receives 2013 Excellence in Health Administration Award

Peggy A. Honoré, DHA, the AmeriHealth Mercy - General Russel Honoré Endowed Professor at the LSUHSC School of Public Health's Health Policy & System Management Program, has been awarded the 2013 Excellence in Health Administration Award by the Health Administration Section of the American Public Health Association. The Excellence in Health Administration Award is given to someone who has advanced the practice of health administration through outstanding leadership and contributions working in management or an educational setting. It was presented to Dr. Honoré during the American Public Health Association annual meeting in Boston.

Dr. Honoré is also Director of the Public Health System, Finance, and Quality Program in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health at the US Department of Health and Human Services. She leads national efforts to establish and implement concepts for quality in the public health system, advance research and competencies in the practice of public health finance, and promote public health systems research. Dr. Honoré organized and moderated the first national conferences on public health systems research and public health finance convened in 2006 and 2007 and developed, as guest editor, two journal publications on public health finance. Her accomplishments in public health quality include coordinating the development of the Consensus Statement on Quality in the Public Health System and the identification of priority areas for improvement of quality in public health for the ASH. She also serves on the Editorial Board of the international journal, BMC Public Health, as an Associate Editor.

Dr. Honoré has the unique experience of serving in the three distinct fields of private industry, academia, and government (federal and state). Leadership positions held in these fields include serving as a university Vice President of Finance and Administration, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Science (Research) Officer at two state health departments, Chief Operating Officer/Chief Financial Officer over a group of four medical clinics, and senior financial positions with McDonald's Corporation and Exxon Co USA. In 2006, she worked with the Senate Subcommittee on Bioterrorism and Preparedness on the reauthorization of the Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness Act.

Dr. Honoré earned a Doctorate in Health Administration (DHA) with honors from the Medical University of South Carolina and Master of Health Administration (MHA) from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She holds a BS in Accounting. Dr. Honoré has received Professor of the Year Awards at multiple universities and is an honorary member of the Delta Omega Honor Society, which recognized her for outstanding contributions in the field of public health. She is a native of New Orleans.
