Heart rate is determined by the number of heartbeats per unit of time, typically expressed as beats per minute (BPM), it can vary with as the body's need for oxygen changes, such as during exercise or sleep.

Beta-blockers increase risk of adverse cardiac event during noncardiac surgical procedure

A recent study shows that patients given beta-blockers may actually be at increased risk of having an adverse cardiac event during a noncardiac surgical procedure. Risk of irregular heartbeat and worsening of symptoms in patients with existing heart disease also seemed to increase, but to a lesser degree.

Bad news for women with sleep apnea: The body's autonomic responses more diminished in women

There's more bad news for women with sleep apnea. A new study from the UCLA School of Nursing shows that the body's autonomic responses - the controls that impact such functions as blood pressure, heart rate and sweating - are weaker in people with obstructive sleep apnea but are even more diminished in women.

Investigators who studied a group of recreational marathon runners have established that strenuous exercise such as running a marathon can damage the heart muscle. Although they found the effect is temporary and reversible, they warn that these effects are more widespread in less fit distance runners and that recreational distance runners should prepare properly before marathons.
