Auxilium receives USPTO patent for XIAFLEX product

Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. a specialty biopharmaceutical company, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued U.S. Patent No. 7,811,560 claiming, among other things, purified collagenase, the active component in Auxilium's product XIAFLEX (collagenase clostridium histolyticum).

Bilirubin identified in Bird of Paradise plant

A research team led by Cary Pirone from the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida International University has identified bilirubin in the popular Bird of Paradise plant. The breakthrough study, published in the September 2010 issue of the American Society for Horticultural Science's journal HortScience, provides new insights into color production in this iconic tropical plant.

New methodologies for protein measurement needed to address adulteration in infant formula and pet food

Recent incidents of adulteration involving infant formula, other milk products and pet food with the industrial chemical melamine revealed the weaknesses of current methods widely used across the domestic and global food industry for determining protein content in foods. The possible utility of alternative existing and emerging methods is the subject of a new paper published in Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, a peer-reviewed journal of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT).

Agilent's HPLC-Chip/MS technology helps identify over 200 different human milk oligosaccharides structures

Agilent Technologies Inc. today announced that a group of researchers from the University of California, Davis, has made a significant discovery: human breast milk contains an unexpected abundance of sugars that coats the lining of infants' intestines, protecting it from noxious bacteria. Results of the research, which used Agilent technology, were published in this month's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.
