Expert testimony at Patel manslaughter trial

In the trial of Dr Jayant Patel an expert surgeon who testified last week was cross examined by the defence lawyers. Patel is currently on trial in the Supreme Court in Brisbane for the manslaughter of three patients and causing grievous bodily harm to a fourth.

Genes improperly granted patents

Some time mid last year six breast cancer patients sued reputed Myriad Genetics, a company that holds patent of two vital genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 that play a role in increasing the risk of breast and ovarian cancers. The fees that the company charges for these genetic tests is a whopping $3,000 which these women claim they cannot afford and the most important of all these women cannot get a second opinion regarding the tests since no one else does them.

Dr Patel ignored advice from colleagues

The charges of manslaughter that Dr Patel has been facing over three patients he had operated on between 2003 and 2005 are now on trial in the Supreme Court in Brisbane. The patients were Mervyn John Morris, 75 , Ames Edward Phillips, 46, and Geradus Wihelmus Gosewinus Kemps, 77. Dr Patel is also charged with one grievous bodily harm case besides these three manslaughter charges to Ian Rodney Vowles, 62.

3 jurors out of Patel manslaughter case in the first 6 days of trial

Another Juror in the manslaughter trail of Dr. Jayant Patel has been discharged from her duties in a latest development. She is the third in the last six days of the trial at the Supreme Court in Brisbane

Expert testimony in trial of Dr Patel

Dr Jayant Patel’s manslaughter trial in the supreme court of Brisbane saw Dr Nigel Chikolwa give testimony about the deteriorating condition of Mr Morris after surgery. Dr Chikolwa was the principal house officer at Bundaberg hospital, where Dr Patel had performed the surgery in 2003.

U.S District Court grants preliminary approval for the settlement of Sampson v. Robinson case

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY) announced today that the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York has granted preliminary approval of settlement of Sampson v. Robinson, et al., Case No. 1:07-CV-06890 (on appeal: Case No. 08-5475), a shareholder action pursued derivatively on behalf of Bristol-Myers Squibb. The action concerned allegations relating to the efforts to settle the Plavix patent litigation in 2006. The proposed settlement is subject to final Court approval. The Court has set a final approval hearing for December 8, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the courtroom of the Honorable Paul A. Crotty, United States District Judge.

Mylan files lawsuit against Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Post-Gazette reporters

Mylan Inc. (Nasdaq: MYL) today announced that the company and its subsidiary Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. filed a civil lawsuit in the Circuit Court of Monongalia County, W.Va., against the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Post-Gazette reporters Len Boselovic and Patricia Sabatini, and others as yet unknown.

Labopharm Inc. today commented on the outcome of patent-infringement litigation initiated by Purdue Pharma Products L.P. against Par Pharmaceutical Companies, Inc. relating to Ultram(R) ER (tramadol hydrochloride extended-release tablets). The patents-in-suit are owned by Purdue and are licensed to Ortho-McNeil, Inc., the marketer of Ultram(R) ER.

Par Pharmaceutical Companies, Inc. today announced that the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware has ruled in favor of Par in its challenge of Purdue's patents relating to extended-release tramadol, which are listed in the Orange Book for Ortho-McNeil's Ultram(R) ER product.

Ormco Corporation and Align Technology agree to collaborate and settle patent litigation

Ormco Corporation, a subsidiary of Danaher Corporation (NYSE: DHR) today announced that Ormco and Align Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALGN) have agreed to enter into an exclusive collaboration arrangement to jointly develop and market an orthodontic product offering that will provide orthodontic patients a treatment solution that involves a combination of Align's Invisalign(R) system and Ormco's Insignia(R) custom orthodontic bracket and arch wire system.

Align Technology settles patent litigation with Ormco

Align Technology, Inc. today announced that it has reached a settlement with Ormco Corporation (Ormco), a subsidiary of Danaher Corporation, to end all pending litigation between the parties and to begin a new strategic collaboration.
