In genetics, microRNAs (miRNA) are single-stranded RNA molecules of 21-23 nucleotides in length, which regulate gene expression. miRNAs are encoded by genes from whose DNA they are transcribed but miRNAs are not translated into protein (i.e. they are non-coding RNAs); instead each primary transcript (a pri-miRNA) is processed into a short stem-loop structure called a pre-miRNA and finally into a functional miRNA. Mature miRNA molecules are partially complementary to one or more messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules, and their main function is to down-regulate gene expression.

Three university academic groups sponsored for the MetaMiner project

GeneGo, Inc., the leading systems biology tools company, announced today that Millipore Corporation has sponsored academic groups from University of Queensland, Sheffield and USC to become members of the collaborative MetaMiner (Stem Cells) project run by GeneGo. MetaMiner is a partnership program for the reconstruction of stem cell pathways and their application in analysis of experimental data as well as knowledge mining.

Study: Genetic variations in miRNA pathway may be used to predict secondary tumor in head and neck cancer patients

Eighteen single-point genetic variations indicate risk of recurrence for early-stage head and neck cancer patients and their likelihood of developing a second type of cancer, researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center reported at the American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference.

New study reveals RNA may play a critical role in cancer treatment

Researchers from Yale University and Mirna Therapeutics, Inc., reversed the growth of lung tumors in mice using a naturally occurring tumor suppressor microRNA. The study reveals that a tiny bit of RNA may one day play a big role in cancer treatment, and provides hope for future patients battling one of the most prevalent and difficult to treat cancers.

USPTO issues patent for Rosetta Genomics' human microRNA miR-193b
