A new course designed to attract former nurses back into the profession is being launched at Sheffield Hallam University. The Return to Practice scheme is a part-time course that prepares for the re-registration of nurses who have been disconnected from the healthcare sector for the last 10 years.

New United Nations data show sharp decline in maternal deaths

New United Nations data show a 45% reduction in maternal deaths since 1990. An estimated 289 000 women died in 2013 due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth, down from 523 000 in 1990.

Edna Adan named inaugural recipient of Renfield Foundation Award for Global Women's Health

Following an intense selection process, Edna Adan has been named the inaugural recipient of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing Renfield Foundation Award for Global Women's Health. The award will be presented to Adan on May 15, 2014 and includes a $100,000 cash prize which will be presented biennially to a leader in the field of global women's health.

Over 40% of pregnant low-income women after diagnosis of false labor do not want to be sent home

More than 40 percent of pregnant low-income women discharged from the hospital after a diagnosis of false or early labor did not want to be sent home, with the most common reasons being that they were in too much pain or lived too far away, according to a study by Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing (LHSON) and Parkland Health & Hospital System.

Binghamton University plays role in improving Rwandan’s healthcare system

Twenty years after the Rwandan Genocide left nearly 1 million dead and 2 million homeless, Binghamton University is playing a role in improving the nation's healthcare. Karen Feltham, a clinical instructor in the Decker School of Nursing, spent the 2013 fall semester in Rwanda working with women in the Rwandan Midwives Association.

New research published in a special issue of Health, Risk & Society looks at perceptions of risk around pregnancy and how this influences decisions about where to give birth. Despite childbirth in the UK being increasingly considered safe, the article by Kirstie Coxon and colleagues show that childbirth is still seen as 'risky'.

Pregnant women who receive midwifery care experience fewer interventions during childbirth

University of Sydney research has found that pregnant women who see the same midwife throughout pregnancy are more likely to experience fewer interventions during birth, and cost the public hospital system less than women who receive standard shared antenatal care or private obstetric care.

World Bank must define life expectancy, say international public health experts

The World Bank must define life expectancy, its key poverty indicator, as starting at the time of conception and not at the time of birth if millions of lives are to be saved from injury or death. International public health experts, writing in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, said that definitional oversight, in which the life of the child is inadvertently cut into two, ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ the womb, covers up risks to the fetus and is particularly unfair to children born in areas increasingly at risk to disasters and already disadvantaged by poverty, hunger and social deprivation.

CUMC plans to build new home for Columbia University School of Nursing

Columbia University Medical Center announced plans today to build a new home for the Columbia University School of Nursing, one of the oldest nursing schools in the nation. The seven-story building will be located on existing Columbia property at the corner of W. 168th Street and Audubon Avenue, at the east end of the CUMC campus. Construction is expected to begin in late 2014.

Midwifery care costs less and just as safe as standard maternity care

Continued care from a named midwife throughout pregnancy, birth, and after the baby is born (caseload midwifery) is just as safe as standard maternity care (shared between different midwives and medical practitioners) for all women irrespective of risk, and is significantly cheaper, according to new research published in The Lancet.
