Abstract submissions, registration now open for 2nd International Symposium on MR-guided Focused Ultrasound

Scheduled for October 17-20, 2010 at the Westfields Marriott near Dulles International Airport, Washington, DC, the symposium will be a premier event for scientists, clinicians and others interested in current and future applications of MR-guided focused ultrasound. ACOEM publishes new medical treatment guidelines for hip and groin disorders

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine today published new medical treatment guidelines for providing care to workers with injuries and disorders of the hip and groin. The new guidelines, which represent the latest chapter in ACOEM's comprehensive publication Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines, are available on line now via ACOEM's APG-I web application; a print version will be available in the fall of 2010, when the Third Edition hard-copy of Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines is published.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Lumizyme (alglucosidase alfa) for patients ages 8 years and older with late-onset (non-infantile) Pompe disease, a rare genetic disorder.

Preliminary data of BIBW 2992 in head and neck cancer, NSCLC to be presented at ASCO 2010

Boehringer Ingelheim will announce preliminary data in the areas of head and neck cancer and non-small cell lung cancer for one of the company's investigational compounds, BIBW 2992. You probably heard a lot about a seasonal or H1N1 flu shot last fall, but you should know that a battery of other adult vaccinations might also become part of your health care routine. Pneumonia and shingles vaccines are preventive-care essentials for older adults, and meningitis and tetanus shots are now college rites of passage. Even the vaccines of childhood—measles, mumps and rubella, and whooping cough—are recommended for adults who missed out in their younger years.

Two common operations for SUI help women achieve similar levels of dryness: Study

Two common operations for stress urinary incontinence help women achieve similar levels of dryness, according to a team of urologists and urogynecologists who compared the treatments in a large U.S. trial supported by the National Institutes of Health. The study is being released online May 17, 2010, by the New England Journal of Medicine to coincide with a presentation at the annual meeting of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Results will appear in the June 3 print edition.

152 research and training grants awarded to researchers at 93 institutions nationwide

The American Cancer Society, the largest non-government, not-for-profit funding source of cancer research in the United States, has awarded 152 new national research and training grants totaling $50,717,000 in the first of two grants cycles for 2010. The grants, primarily to early career researchers, cover a broad range of investigator-initiated ideas at 93 institutions nationwide, from whether cadmium exposure increases the risk of endometrial cancer, to studies of plant and bacterial-bourne compounds, to a study on a protein called survivin that could lead to novel drugs targeting prostate cancer.

No increase in risk of glioma or meningioma with use of mobile phones: INTERPHONE project

The International Journal of Epidemiology today published a combined data analysis from a multi national population-based case-control study of glioma and meningioma, the most common types of brain tumour. This is the first in a series of combined data analyses of head and neck tumours published as part of the internationally coordinated INTERPHONE project.
