FDA grants t2cure orphan drug designation for t2c001 in Buerger's Disease

t2cure GmbH, a biopharmaceutical company developing and marketing stem cell-based regenerative therapies, announced today that the FDA has granted orphan drug designation to t2c001 for the treatment of Buerger's Disease. The Company also announced that in a concurrent application in Europe the EMA's Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products recently recommended t2c001 for orphan designation to the European Commission.

Smoking cigarettes may influence RA disease progression: Study

Smoking cigarettes is a significant risk factor for developing rheumatoid arthritis and may have a negative impact on the effectiveness of anti-tumour necrosis factor inhibitors in RA patients taking these treatments, according to results of two studies presented today at EULAR 2010, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy.

Studies suggest role for IL-10 in prevention and treatment of neurological disease in newborns

This bacterium, Escherichia coli K1, is the most common cause of meningitis in premature infants and the second most common cause of the disease in newborns. "The ineffectiveness of antibiotics in treating newborns with meningitis and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria require new strategies," explains Nemani V. Prasadarao, PhD, associate professor of infectious disease at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

Protein IL-10 removes Escherichia coli K1 bacterium from blood and reverses brain damage

A team of researchers at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), along with colleagues from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and the Universite Auvergne, France, have discovered an important role for a small, naturally occurring protein called interleukin-10 (IL-10) in removing bacteria from the blood of infected mice and reversing damage to the brain.

Idera reports preliminary results from IMO-3100 Phase 1 clinical trial for autoimmune, inflammatory diseases

Idera Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced preliminary results from a Phase 1 clinical trial of IMO-3100, its lead Toll-like Receptor (TLR) 7 and TLR9 antagonist drug candidate for potential applications in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. In this trial, healthy subjects in five dosage cohorts received single doses of IMO-3100 from 0.04 to 0.64 mg/kg. IMO-3100 was well tolerated at all dose levels.

Can-Fite BioPharma opens CF101 IND for psoriasis with US FDA

Can-Fite BioPharma Ltd, a biotechnology company traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, announced today that it has opened Investigational New Drug application (IND) with the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). The IND is for Can-Fite's lead compound, CF101, for the treatment of patients with psoriasis. This is the third US IND for CF101, and the fourth for Can-Fite.

Genentech reports results from Phase III study of Avastin in women with advanced ovarian cancer

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, today announced results from a Phase III study of Avastin (bevacizumab) that showed women with previously untreated advanced ovarian cancer who received Avastin in combination with chemotherapy, followed by the continuation of Avastin alone, had a 39 percent improvement in the likelihood of living longer without the disease worsening (progression-free survival or PFS) compared to chemotherapy alone.

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine have shown that use of magnetic resonance imaging in an animal model can non-invasively identify dangerous plaques. The findings, which appear in the May issue of Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging, offer possible applications in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with atherosclerosis.

Narrow-band imaging could be novel tool for in vivo assessment of mucosal angiogenesis

Angiogenesis plays a crucial role in neoplastic and non-neoplastic chronic inflammatory disorders, including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Several reports have shown that blockade of angiogenesis in preclinical models of IBD is a promising new therapeutic approach. Visualize angiogenesis in vivo may represent the first step for such a therapeutic approach. Narrow-band imaging (NBI) is a new endoscopic technology that highlights mucosal surface structures and microcapillaries.
