Following a recent trip to the largest HIV/AIDS clinic in Uganda, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon reflects on the recent progress made in the fight against the disease in a McClatchy opinion piece. Though "Uganda was the epicenter of the AIDS epidemic. …Uganda is also a success story," Ban writes. "A decade ago, fewer than 10,000 people were on the new generation of antiretroviral drugs that suppress the disease and offer the promise of a normal life.

Curis reports topline results from GDC-0449 Phase II clinical trial for metastatic colorectal cancer

Curis, Inc., a drug development company seeking to develop next generation targeted small molecule drug candidates for cancer treatment, today announced topline results from a Phase II clinical trial conducted by Roche and Genentech, Curis' collaborator and a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, of GDC-0449, a first-in-class Hedgehog pathway inhibitor. GDC-0449 was tested in combination with Avastin® (bevacizumab) and FOLFOX or FOLFIRI chemotherapy in first-line metastatic colorectal cancer patients.

Scientists receive over $3M to launch training and mentorship programs for promising young researchers

Scientists from the Universit- de Montr-al and its affiliated engineering school, -cole Polytechnique, have received major funding from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Over $3 million was awarded to enable both institutions to launch training and mentorship programs for promising young researchers.

IRX Therapeutics raises $8M to further develop pipeline of cancer vaccine candidates

IRX Therapeutics, a developer of novel immunomodulators to treat cancer and viral diseases, today announced that it has raised $8 million through a note offering to existing shareholders. The new funding will be used to further develop its pipeline of cancer vaccine candidates, including its lead product, IRX-2. IRX Therapeutics has now raised a total of more than $80 million in private financing.

Abbott, Neurocrine enter collaboration to develop, commercialize elagolix for endometriosis-related pain

Abbott and Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. today announced that they have entered into a collaboration agreement to develop and commercialize elagolix for the treatment of endometriosis-related pain. Elagolix is a novel, first-in-class oral gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist, which has recently completed a phase IIb study in endometriosis. In addition to endometriosis, elagolix will be evaluated for the treatment of uterine fibroids.

Robert Zucker to receive RSA Distinguished Researcher Award

Robert Zucker, Ph.D., director of the University of Michigan Addiction Research Center, and the Substance Abuse Section in the Department of Psychiatry, has been named recipient of the 31st annual Research Society on Alcoholism Distinguished Researcher Award. Trubion announces Pfizer's decision to discontinue development of TRU-015 for RA

Trubion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced Pfizer's decision to discontinue development of TRU-015 (PF-05212374), an investigational drug in Phase 2 evaluation for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) developed under the companies' CD20 collaboration. However, Pfizer has confirmed that it will continue to develop SBI-087 (PF-05230895), Trubion's next-generation, humanized, subcutaneous CD20 RA product candidate also in Phase 2 clinical evaluation.

USPTO issues patent covering methods for enhancing RNA silencing activity of RNAi agents

Silence Therapeutics plc announces the issuance of United States patent 7,732,593, titled Methods and Compositions For Controlling Efficacy of RNA Silencing, by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The issued patent, which is based on the seminal research of Phillip D. Brain stimulation with ultrasound may enhance cognitive function

The ability to diagnose and treat brain dysfunction without surgery, may rely on a new method of noninvasive brain stimulation using pulsed ultrasound developed by a team of scientists led by William "Jamie" Tyler, a neuroscientist at Arizona State University. The approach, published in the journal Neuron on June 9, shows that pulsed ultrasound not only stimulates action potentials in intact motor cortex in mice but it also "elicits motor responses comparable to those only previously achieved with implanted electrodes and related techniques," says Yusuf Tufail, the lead author from ASU's School of Life Sciences.

Curexo Technology Corporation made history on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 when its next-generation ROBODOC® Surgical System assisted Dr. William Bargar as he performed the first commercial hip replacement surgery on Warren Roberts of Davis, CA. Mr. Roberts had his left hip replacement using this robotic device in 1995 as a part of an FDA study. This recent surgery performed at Sutter General in Sacramento was for Mr. Roberts' right hip.
