Positive results from Ardea Biosciences' Phase 2b study of RDEA594 for hyperuricemia and gout

Ardea Biosciences, Inc. announced positive, preliminary, top-line results from its Phase 2b monotherapy study of RDEA594, its lead product candidate for the treatment of hyperuricemia and gout. In this 28-day, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation study, 123 gout patients with hyperuricemia (serum urate levels greater than or equal to 8 mg/dL) received 200 mg once-daily (qd) RDEA594, 400 mg qd RDEA594, 600 mg qd RDEA594 or matching placebo.

ChromaDex records revenue of $5.78M for 2009

ChromaDex Corporation, a leader in phytochemical reference standards and contract research, today announced financial results for the Fiscal Year ending January 2, 2010. On a reported basis calculated in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (U.S. GAAP), ChromaDex announced a net loss attributable to common stockholders of $0.03 per share for the one year period ended January 2, 2010. As of January 2, 2010, cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities totaled $471,378.

BioNanomatrix, Inc., a developer of breakthrough single-molecule genomic analysis technology, today announced the issuance of U.S. patent 7,670,770 for nanochannel arrays that enable high-throughput macromolecular analysis. AgaMatrix, sanofi-aventis announce long-term partnership for BGM solutions

AgaMatrix, Inc. and sanofi-aventis today announced that they have signed a long-term agreement for the development, supply and commercialization of blood glucose monitoring (BGM) solutions. Chocolate can lower blood pressure and reduce risk of heart disease: Study

Easter eggs and other chocolate may be good for you - at least in small quantities and preferably if it's dark chocolate - according to research that shows just one small square of chocolate a day can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease. The study is published online today (Wednesday 31 March) in the European Heart Journal.

Gout incidence lower in women than men: Study

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine found that women with serum uric acid levels over 5 mg/dl had a significantly lower risk of developing gout than men. This study, the first to examine the relationship between uric acid levels and gout risk in women, also evaluated purported risk factors for gout and found that increasing age, obesity, hypertension, alcohol use, and diuretic use to be among leading contributors for women.

Dr Patel ignored advice from colleagues

The charges of manslaughter that Dr Patel has been facing over three patients he had operated on between 2003 and 2005 are now on trial in the Supreme Court in Brisbane. The patients were Mervyn John Morris, 75 , Ames Edward Phillips, 46, and Geradus Wihelmus Gosewinus Kemps, 77. Dr Patel is also charged with one grievous bodily harm case besides these three manslaughter charges to Ian Rodney Vowles, 62.
