US Oncology honored as inaugural inductee to Texas Governor's Business Hall of Fame

US Oncology, Inc., the nation's premier oncology services company supporting the nation's largest network including more than 1,300 oncologists and more than 10,000 clinicians and cancer experts to advance cancer care in America, was honored on Feb. 6, by Texas Governor Rick Perry at the Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Football Challenge in El Paso, Texas. US Oncology was honored as an inaugural inductee to the Governor's Business Hall of Fame along with Baker Hughes, Bell Helicopter, and Texas Instruments.

The new decade may herald an era of cell therapy -- treating human diseases by delivering highly specific beneficial cells. The CEO Roundtable on Cancer salutes Mike Krzyzewski, who on Saturday, February 13th will celebrate his 1000th game leading the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team. Tomorrow afternoon’s game at 1 pm against the University of Maryland will mark an amazing achievement only seven other coaches in the history of the game have done at a single school. Beginning in 1980, Coach K’s career at Duke has been nothing short of incredible, including leading the school to 294 wins from 2000-09 – the most in the history of the game by any school in any decade.

Tobacco users with HPV-positive head and neck cancers at increased risk of recurrence

Patients with head and neck cancer linked to high risk human papillomavirus, or HPV, have worse outcomes if they are current or former tobacco users, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Histone modifications associated with pancreatic cancer development and progression

Specific chemical modifications to proteins called histones, which are found in the nucleus of cells and act as spools around which DNA is wound, can be used to predict prognosis and response to treatment in subsets patients with pancreatic cancer, a study by researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center has found.

Study shows benefits of stent grafts over balloon angioplasty for patients who undergo dialysis

A randomized multicenter study of 190 patients at 13 medical centers shows-- for the first time-- the "superior" benefit of stent grafts over balloon angioplasty for maintaining function of dialysis access grafts in kidney failure patients who undergo dialysis. Until now, no other therapy has proven more effective than angioplasty.

Third party reexamination of Phase III study of Ereska meets primary endpoint

Lack of provider status denies radiation oncologists authority to make decisions based on patient safety and treatment accuracy

Our members deeply regret the needless tragedies outlined in the Times articles and express our sympathy to the families who have lost loved ones and witnessed their suffering. Our hearts also go out to all others whose lives have been impacted by these tragedies including therapists, physicians and physicists. We feel that, as radiation oncology professionals, we are all, directly or indirectly, responsible for these disastrous treatment errors and we therefore must, in future, take a more active role to assure episodes like these are never repeated.
