Studying a rare disorder known as tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), researchers at Children's Hospital Boston add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that autism spectrum disorders, which affect 25 to 50 percent of TSC patients, result from a miswiring of connections in the developing brain, leading to improper information flow.

Home-laundered scrubs have greater bacterial contamination than other alternatives

A study comparing the aerobic bacterial bioburden associated with surgical scrub attire shows significantly greater contamination among home-laundered attire than scrubs laundered by the healthcare facility, scrubs sent out by the facility to a third-party company for laundering, or single-use/disposable scrubs.

Impulse Accelerated Technologies' FPGA compiler used to deploy DNA biotechnology genome search algorithm

Impulse Accelerated Technologies today announced that its CoDeveloper C-to-FPGA compiler has been used to develop and deploy a DNA biotechnology genome search algorithm on a new, modular FPGA acceleration platform created by Pico Computing, of Seattle, Washington. The Xilinx FPGA-accelerated bioinformatics algorithm, written in C, performs sequence analysis and pair-match scoring of DNA runs with lengths of 25 base pairs.

IPMT procedure can benefit patients with acute deep vein thrombosis

Patients with acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) develop potentially dangerous blood clots and can suffer severe leg pain and swelling. Doctors with Virginia Interventional & Vascular Associates (VIVA) report success over the past two years in treating acute DVT patients with a procedure called isolated pharmacomechanical thrombolysis (IPMT), which destroys clots much faster than traditional therapies.

Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI) has opened a new outpatient imaging center in Waukesha’s Westbrook Health Center, and has relocated all of its Delafield center services to this new location.
