Radiation therapy (in North America), or radiotherapy (in the UK and Australia) also called radiation oncology, and sometimes abbreviated to XRT, is the medical use of ionizing radiation as part of cancer treatment to control malignant cells (not to be confused with radiology, the use of radiation in medical imaging and diagnosis).

Ensuring the optimum radiation dose on the same day as the brachytherapy implant in prostate cancer treatment manages to control the illness in about 95% of the cases. This is the result of research undertaken at the University Hospital of Navarre and published in the latest issue of Brachytherapy, journal of the American Society of Brachytherapy.

Al Amal Hospital in Qatar commences treatment with Varian's RapidArc radiotherapy

One of the leading cancer centers in the Middle East has become among the first in the region to introduce fast and efficient RapidArc® radiotherapy treatments from Varian Medical Systems. Older women in Scotland who have been diagnosed with breast cancer do not always receive the same level of treatment as younger patients, the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer has said. According to the charity, Scottish women over the age of 80 are 40 times less likely to be offered surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy for breast cancer.

GE Healthcare, a unit of the General Electric Company, today will present results of a phase 1 study of anti-[18F]FACBC at the 57th annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah. Exelixis, Inc. today reported updated interim data from three ongoing trials of XL147 (SAR245408), a selective, orally available small molecule inhibitor of phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K). Activation of the PI3K pathway is a frequent event in human tumors, promoting cell proliferation, survival, and resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
