"Aware that their stock has taken the same tumble as home values, Congress' most vulnerable Democrats are declaring their independence from their party's agenda in Facebook profiles, television advertisements, news interviews and campaign websites leading up to the Nov. 2 election. That's when Republicans hope to retake control of the House they lost four years ago."

Community health centers help those without insurance

In 2001, a Charleston, W.Va., a hospital and three community health centers set up a Community Access Program to help give low-income residents a primary health care system in the hopes of lowering emergency room care. The program has enrolled 5,000 people and "cut their hospital use in half," the Charleston Gazette reports.

Politics and health care: Poll finds 'many' want more government as money pours into some campaigns

A new AP poll finds that Americans who think the law should have done more outnumber those who think the government should stay out of health care by 2-to-1. The poll found that about four in 10 adults think the new law did not go far enough to change the health care system, regardless of whether they support the law, oppose it or remain neutral.

The New York Times: "In the legislative blueprint that Republicans hope will serve as a roadmap to winning control of the House, they declared their two highest priorities to be creating jobs and stopping 'out-of-control spending' by the federal government." It includes a call to repeal the health law, while retaining "popular provisions."

Vical prices underwritten common stock public offering

Vical Incorporated today announced the pricing of an underwritten public offering of 15,000,000 shares of its common stock at a price to the public of $2.25 per share. The gross proceeds to us from this offering are expected to be approximately $33.8 million, before deducting underwriting discounts and commissions and other estimated offering expenses payable by us. The offering is expected to close on or about September 29, 2010, subject to customary closing conditions.

The United Fresh Produce Association is urging the U.S. House of Representatives to immediately pass the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, legislation that will reauthorize all child nutrition programs. It is critical that all child nutrition programs be reauthorized and signed into law by President Obama before they expire on September 30. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act makes important reforms and strengthens child nutrition programs by investing $4.5 billion in programs to reduce childhood hunger and childhood obesity.

Health Care REIT, Inc. today announced the pricing of its underwritten public offering of 8,000,000 shares of common stock at $45.75 per share. The offering was increased in size from 7,000,000 shares in response to investor demand. The company has granted the underwriters an option to purchase up to an additional 1,200,000 shares during the next 30 days to cover over-allotments, if any.

NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the closing of a public offering of 7,912,000 shares of its common stock, including 1,032,000 shares sold pursuant to the full exercise of an overallotment option previously granted to the underwriters. Net proceeds were approximately $44.4 million after deducting underwriting discounts and estimated offering expenses.
