UC3M, IRYCIS patent new automated skin biopsy device

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and the Institute for Health Research of the Hospital "Ramón y Cajal" have patented a new device for performing skin biopsies. With this new tool a skin biopsy can be performed with fewer instruments and the length of the procedure is shortened from thirty minutes to less than five.

UNICEF working to bring relief for children affected by earthquake in Nepal

UNICEF expects children to be among the worst affected by the devastating 7.9 earthquake that struck Nepal today, affecting the area around the capital city of Kathmandu. While the full impact of the disaster is still being assessed, an estimated 40 percent of Nepal's population is children, who are the most vulnerable during emergencies.

The Dow Chemical Company and Habitat for Humanity announced today plans to expand their partnership in 2015 to address global housing and sanitation issues, helping thousands of families across five continents create decent, affordable housing. With first-time builds in Ethiopia, Argentina, Colombia and Nepal, Dow is increasing its support to a total of 30 countries since becoming Habitat's first national partner in 1983.

UNICEF and OFC team up to support children affected by Pacific cyclones

From 11-14 March 2015, Tropical Cyclone Pam, with winds of up to Category 5, hit the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. At the same time, the Cyclone caused high waves to crash over atoll islands in Kiribati and the Solomon Islands. The super cyclone is one of the worst natural disasters in South Pacific history.

Caltech researchers reveal new information that could help fight against hookworms

Tiny parasitic hookworms infect nearly half a billion people worldwide--almost exclusively in developing countries--causing health problems ranging from gastrointestinal issues to cognitive impairment and stunted growth in children. By sequencing and analyzing the genome of one particular hookworm species, Caltech researchers have uncovered new information that could aid the fight against these parasites.
