Champions Oncology begins prospective correlative trial of PDX in patients with sarcoma

Champions Oncology today announced that it has initiated a sponsored prospective correlative trial of patient derived xenograft modeling (PDX or Champions TumorGraft PDX models) in patients with metastatic or recurrent sarcoma. Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada is the first clinical site to enroll patients in the newly-opened study.

New injectable agent can potentially increase surgeon's ability to remove cancerous tumor during surgery

Doctors at the Duke University School of Medicine have tested a new injectable agent that causes cancer cells in a tumor to fluoresce, potentially increasing a surgeon's ability to locate and remove all of a cancerous tumor on the first attempt. The imaging technology was developed through collaboration with scientists at Duke, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lumicell Inc.

New oral breast cancer drug has potential to combat other types of cancer

Palbociclib, a new oral drug whose efficacy in combating breast cancer has been demonstrated alone and in combination with endocrine therapy, also has potential to combat other types of cancer, according to a literature review and additional original research conducted by experts at the Abramson Cancer Center in the University of Pennsylvania published this month in JAMA Oncology.

USF professors named 2015 Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors

University of South Florida professors Selim A. Chacour, David M. Eddy, Dean F. Martin, and G. Douglas Letson have been named 2015 Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. Chacour and Eddy are in the Institute for Advanced Discovery & Innovation, Martin is in the College of Arts and Sciences and Letson holds appointments at both Moffitt Cancer Center and USF.

AACR rapid and dramatic responses in TRK fusion patients

Loxo Oncology, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company innovating the development of highly selective medicines for patients with genetically defined cancers, today announced new results from its Phase 1 open-label, dose-escalation trial of LOXO-101, a selective inhibitor of tropomyosin receptor kinase (TRK) signaling molecules, and the first preclinical data for its RET and FGFR programs. Special CD4+ T cells appear to inhibit cancer growth, enhance tumor-killing powers of other immune cells

The key to immune-based cancer therapies lies in the ability to exploit some weakness within the tumor and its environment or to elude cancer's offenses. Writing in the journal Scientific Reports, researchers led by a group from the Roswell Park Cancer Institute Center for Immunotherapy have shared new insights about a subset of T cells that appear to do both those things, inhibiting cancer growth at the same time that they enhance the tumor-killing powers of other immune cells.
