Mayo Clinic researchers join expedition to Everest

It's a natural laboratory for studying heart disease, lung problems, muscle loss, sleeping disorders and new medical technologies. It's also the highest mountain in the world. Mount Everest's extreme altitude puts climbers under the same conditions experienced by patients suffering from heart disease, obesity or advanced age. To take advantage of that, Mayo Clinic researchers are joining an expedition to Everest with National Geographic, The North Face and Montana State University.

The survey showed that the events of the evening have an impact on the night ahead. Surveyors found that a good sleeper ensure they have at least two hours and seven minutes 'down time' before hitting the bed. The average person will watch at least an hour and three quarters of television, opting for soap operas or comedy quiz shows. And when going to bed, Brits have another 20 minutes rest time before finally falling asleep at 10:26pm.

A new study dispels the age old belief that sleep doesn’t get more difficult with age. The study shows that sleep quality tends to improve the older people got, with adults in their 80s getting better sleep than any other age group surveyed. The new study was published in the journal Sleep.

Proposal to tie likelihood of sleep apnea to body mass index

The first lawsuit against a trucking company acknowledging that sleep apnea played a role in a highway death reached a settlement last week. A Texas family was awarded over $3 million dollars after a driver rear-ended John Lindsay's vehicle on a Texas interstate in May of 2010. Evidence showed that the driver had refused to treat his previously diagnosed sleep apnea and the company did not ensure follow up care was provided.
