American Medical Systems second-quarter net income increases 22.0% to $20.6M

American Medical Systems Holdings, Inc. reported sales of $136.4 million for the second quarter of 2010, a 7.9 percent increase over sales of $126.4 million in the comparable quarter of 2009. Adjusting for the negative impact of $1.4 million due to fluctuations in foreign exchange rates since the time the second quarter guidance was issued; revenue would have achieved the upper end of the guidance range.

AMS reports positive results from clinical trial of MiniArc Single-Incision Sling System for SUI

American Medical Systems® (AMS), a leading provider of world-class devices and therapies for both male and female pelvic health, today announced results of a prospective, multi-center study on their market leading MiniArc Single-Incision Sling System for female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The study concludes that MiniArc efficacy rates for negative cough stress test (CST) and 1-hr Pad Weight Test (PWT) at 12 months were 90.6 percent and 84.5 percent, respectively.

Two common operations for SUI help women achieve similar levels of dryness: Study

Two common operations for stress urinary incontinence help women achieve similar levels of dryness, according to a team of urologists and urogynecologists who compared the treatments in a large U.S. trial supported by the National Institutes of Health. The study is being released online May 17, 2010, by the New England Journal of Medicine to coincide with a presentation at the annual meeting of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Results will appear in the June 3 print edition.

Warning over baby slings

A baby sling is a long strip of cloth that is used to support the baby across the front or side of the care giver’s body. New warnings have come to the forefront linking these innocuous baby slings to infant deaths. US health authorities have warned parents that tiny babies may be at a suffocation risk from these slings. Reports say that these slings have caused the death of 14 babies over the last 20 years including 3 last year. Of these 12 babies were less than 4 months old.
