"Tan Tax" will hurt middle-class women and women-owned businesses

The proposed 10 percent federal tax on indoor tanning services, added to the latest U.S. Senate health care reform bill in a back-room deal over the weekend, will fall 40-50 percent short of delivering the revenue its proponents promised, according to the International Smart Tan Network (Smart Tan). The tax unfairly targets female consumers, who make up more than two-thirds of tanning clients, and would be detrimental to the thousands of women who own the majority of America's indoor tanning salons.

Study suggests routine evaluation does not predict prostate cancer

On the heels of the American Cancer Society's recent controversial response to breast and prostate cancer screenings guidelines, a new study from the Mayo Clinic has emerged analyzing the correlation between prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and prostate size. The study discovered that routine annual evaluation of prostate growth does not predict the development of prostate cancer.

Bovie Medical's Resistick II coated electrodes receive FDA 510(k) clearance

Bovie Medical Corporation, a manufacturer and marketer of electrosurgical products, today announced the Company has received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its line of coated blades, needles and ball electrodes used for cutting and coagulating soft tissues during surgical procedures. New findings show ether discovery might have occurred earlier

Comprehensive up-date on pharmacology-assisted vitreoretinal surgery

Since the advent of pars plana vitrectomy, immense technical advances in the treatment of retinal diseases have been made. However, some mechanically based limitations of vitreoretinal surgery may result in incomplete removal of the vitreous, especially at the vitreoretinal interface and at the vitreous base. Here, pharmacology can be of assistance. For instance, enzymes that cleave the vitreoretinal junction without damaging the retina or which induce liquefaction may be applied.
