Recent release: Congressional briefing looks to maximize resources for HIV/AIDS response

A UNAIDS press release describes a Congressional bipartisan briefing that took place on Tuesday with the theme, "Together we will end AIDS." Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) hosted the briefing, which aimed to "find ways of maximizing new opportunities to respond to HIV," according to the press release.

Recent release: More effort needed to reach universal access to ART by 2015, MSF/UNAIDS report says

"Much still needs to be done to get treatment to those who need it and to meet the UNAIDS-endorsed goal to achieve universal access by 2015, according to a new survey examining 25 HIV indicators assessing strategies, tools and policies to get the best HIV treatment to more people, sooner," the Center for Global Health Policy's "Science Speaks" blog reports.

International AIDS conference kicks off in Washington, D.C.

The XIX International AIDS Conference opened in Washington, D.C., on Sunday and "is expected to draw 25,000 people, including politicians, scientists and activists, as well as some of the estimated 34 million people living with HIV who will tell their stories," Agence France-Presse reports.

Corporate leaders call on 46 countries to lift travel restrictions for people living with HIV

Two dozen corporate leaders on Sunday signed a statement calling on 46 countries to lift restrictions on travelers who are living with HIV because the policies are discriminatory and bad for business, VOA's "Breaking News" blog reports.

New research published Online First in The Lancet suggests that drug-resistant HIV has been increasing in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa since the roll-out of antiretroviral therapy (ART) nearly a decade ago.

UNAIDS releases report highlighting gains, gaps in global HIV/AIDS response

Ahead of the XIX International AIDS Conference next week, UNAIDS on Wednesday launched a new report, titled "Together we will end AIDS", "that shows that a record eight million people are now receiving antiretroviral therapy [ARVs], and that domestic funding for HIV has exceeded global investments," the U.N. News Centre reports.

HIV drug coverage in sub-Saharan Africa continues to improve but not sustainable, UNAIDS' Sidibe says

At the end of 2011, 6.2 million people in sub-Saharan Africa were taking antiretroviral drugs, about 56 percent of the people in need in the region, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe noted in an interview last week, saying, "Ten years ago, nobody would have imagined that such a result would be possible," Agence France-Presse reports. "Sidibe -- visiting Paris ahead of the July 22-27 International AIDS Conference in Washington -- said he was worried that African countries remained so dependent on foreign help," the news service states.

U.N. holds panel discussion regarding strategic AIDS financing
