Urinary tract infections are a serious health problem affecting millions of people each year. Infections of the urinary tract are the second most common type of infection in the body. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) account for about 8.3 million doctor visits each year.* Women are especially prone to UTIs for reasons that are not yet well understood. One woman in five develops a UTI during her lifetime. UTIs in men are not as common as in women but can be very serious when they do occur.

Smoking cessation program prior to hip or knee replacement provides better surgical outcomes

Smokers who needed a hip or knee replacement experienced better surgical outcomes and fewer adverse events including hospital readmissions, surgical site infections and blood clots if they were enrolled in a smoking cessation program prior to surgery, according to preliminary new research that needs to be confirmed by larger studies.

A study conducted by Yale University has shown that cranberries do not reduce the incidence of urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the presence of microbial pathogens within the kidneys, bladder or urethra and is considered to be the most common bacterial infection.
